В тексте Сильма есть вполне четкое описание посланника Саурона по имени Тхурингвэтиль, "вампирки" из Ангбанда: "He turned aside therefore at Sauron's isle, as they ran northward again, and he took thence the ghastly wolf-hame of Draugluin, and the bat-fell of Thuringwethil. She was the messenger of Sauron, and was wont to fly in vampire's form to Angband; and her great fingered wings were barbed at each joint's end with and iron claw."
В тексте Лэ это имя всплывает один раз:
'Thy name, thou shrieking waif, thy name! 3950
Tidings enough from Thu; there came
but short while since. What would he now?
Why send such messenger as thou?'
'Thuringwethil I am, who cast
a shadow o'er the face aghast 3955
of the sallow moon in the doomed land
of shivering Beleriand.'
'Liar art thou, who shalt not weave
deceit before mine eyes. Now leave
thy form and raiment false, and stand 3960
revealed, and delivered to my hand!'
В Grey Annals единственное упоминание имени в §204: "Then with the aid of Húan and her arts, Lúthien disguised Beren as a wolf in the hame of Draugluin, and herself as the vampire Thuringwethil, and they passed over Anfauglith and came to Angband, but Húan abode in the woods."
А вот что говорят на эту тему The Ethymologies: "THUR- surround, fence, ward, hedge in, secrete. Ilk. thúren guarded, hidden. Cf. Ilk. Garthurian Hidden Realm (= Doriath), sc. garð-thurian; Noldorinized as Arthurien, more completely as Ar(dh)-thoren: thoren (*thaurēnā) pp. of thoro- fence [see 3AR].
Thurin-gwethil (woman of) secret shadow, Doriathren name (N Dolwethil) assumed by Tinuviel as a bat-shaped fay [WATH]. [Cf. the Lay of Leithian line 3954, where a marginal note explains Thuringwethil as
'she of hidden shadow' (III. 297, 304). The present entry retains the story of the Lay: it was Luthien who called herself by this name before Morgoth (see III. 306).]
Вот что говорит на эту тему сам Кристофер в примечаниях к Лэ: "Luthien's naming herself Thuringwethil to Morgoth (line 3954) is notable. In The Silmarillion (p. 178) the bat-fell which Huan brought from Tol-in-Gaurhoth was that of Thuringwethil: 'she was the messenger of Sauron, and was wont to fly in vampire's form to Angband'; whereas in the Lay (lines 3402 ff.), as I have noticed (p. 284), 'the bat-wings are only said to be such as bear up Thu's messengers, and are not associated with a particular or chief messenger'. It seems possible that in the Lay Luthien devised this name ('she of hidden shadow') as a riddling description of herself, and that this led to the conception of the bat-messenger from the Wizard's Isle to Angband named Thuringwethil; but there is no proof of this.
