A new FB friend, from Buenos Aires just messaged me, clearly in a suicidal depression. We communicated in a spirit of hope initially but she soon confessed she'd taken a heavy dose of pills and I tried to urge calling a hotline or hospital. She wrote words of thanks for being an inspiration for her from an early age, but signed off eventually without confirming my (compassionate) 'demand' that she promise to message me tomorrow. Arrgh. I guess I'm hoping someone there--nearby--gets to her in time!
I was talking (uselessly?) about helplessness and feeling overwhelmed, but now I feel helpless and frustrated and more than disturbed; poor kid!
Her name's Vana Mermet, and I post her name reluctantly, but what to do?

Mary Hill This happened to me when I worked a hot line years ago.The man was in California driver in his car.I had the operator connect me with the police in the city he lived in,they actually found him in time.Is this something you could possibly do,I only had the mans name and city also.Especially if she has a passport or a drivers licence.

Ted Nasmith She seemed highly intelligent and mentioned how her grandfather once suggested "my IQ will make me suffer more than average people". She said she works with children in a previous, introductory conversation, and just seemed overwhelmed with sadness at the suffering she witnesses. Sounds like burnout, but certainly not something to do yourself in b/c of, as I tried to persuade her.

Tanja Daub okay so I called at the number that Ted posted earlier. They said they got the fax that Igor sent and they've been trying to find her, but they don't know where she lives. They contacted the police, they found her on facebook, but they don't have her address or anything and they say they're still looking for her but there's nothing they can do if they don't have more information.

But anyway i'm pretty sure that Tolkien is proud of what you and the others did, there where he is smoking is pipe now! His characters appreciated friendship and courage above everything, and you all gave a great example of friendship and courage!

Deborah O'Sullivan Hope the woman who was in distress is able to get the help she needs and deserves. It is so sad that this person was in such a desperate place - my heart goes out to her. It is also sad that her actions caused such emotional distress and profound helplessness to those who were trying to help. There is a world-wide organization that is of use and can be a good resource if contacted in time.

Anne Spee-Frickus Well done all here, I would say; this was a team effort. I do so hope Vana will be allright, but also that she seeks help. Here in the Netherlands we lost a member of our Tolkien society; she took her life too and succeeded. I often wonder why she did not reach out for help, but nobody saw it coming and then it was too late. At her funeral it turned out that she did not really have many people in her life to fall back on; we, from Unquendor, were probably closest.....
